Mosamia
A Mosamia mosaic running the length of a café wall above a banquette, the panoramic scene worked in warm stone tesserae inside an oak frame and lit by a slim cove light above.

Mosamia Art

Photographs and artworks rebuilt in 1 cm x 1 cm natural stone tesserae, at architectural scale.

One photograph, rebuilt in stone.

The same photograph as a mosaic simulation: the identical field and figures rebuilt from a fine regular grid of flat-toned stone tesserae, the treeline resolved into rows of dark green and grey squares.
Original photographMosaic simulation
A close view of the same mosaic under raking light: individual one-centimetre stones read one by one, the picture resolving into a grid of warm ochre, cream and near-black tesserae.

How the work is made

Six steps, from the image a customer sends to the modules that arrive on site.

Evaluation and simulation
Near-instant
Production
About 3–4 weeks, depending on the project

The full process

  1. Image submission

The customer sends the image to transform.

  2. Image evaluation

Mosamia determines the minimum dimensions the image needs to reproduce effectively. Larger alternatives may be proposed.

  3. Mosaic simulation

A digital simulation of how the image will appear in natural stone, before the project proceeds.

  4. Close-up simulation

A close view showing how the image is interpreted through the individual 1 cm tesserae.

  5. Quote

  6. Production

Begins once specifications and the simulation are confirmed.

Where it goes

Walls, floors, residential and commercial spaces, hospitality environments, offices and public interiors.

Arriving on site

Because larger artworks consist of multiple 31.2 cm x 31.2 cm modules, every project includes a placement guide, and each module carries placement information on its backing so installers can reconstruct the artwork correctly.

Installation systems

Selected work

Completed Art installations, documented from simulation through to the finished wall.

  • The finished leopard mosaic hung in a dark frame on an interior wall, washed by two ceiling downlights that rake across the surface so the gold tesserae flare and the black ground stays deep.

  • Close photograph of the finished mosaic from an oblique angle: rows of small rectangular tesserae running away down the panel, each catching the warm strip light differently.

  • The finished eye study installed on a wall, a single monumental eye and brow built in rust and sepia tesserae over a warm cream ground.
